Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. donates $50,000 for

Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation



RAPID CITY, S.D. (Dec. 15, 2011) —Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. (SMRi) has donated $50,000 to Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation, which is tasked with improving the quality of life for residents in and around the Sturgis community.

The donation is in conjunction with SMRi’s overall goal to give back to the Black Hills, a community that gave birth to and has supported the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for decades. SMRi is dedicated to distributing revenue in the community and helping fuel the local economy by protecting the Sturgis Rally Trademarks. SMRi is committed to making charitable contributions to further the health of the Black Hills community through well-known organizations such as the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. SMRi understands that a strong, stable, healthy community year-round is what keeps the Sturgis Rally strong decade after decade.

“We feel that the Sturgis Rally Charities foundation is a great way to keep money generated by the Sturgis trademarks in the Black Hills, which is the foundation of the overall mission of SMRi. The volunteer board of SMRi has put in countless hours over the year, and being able to give back to the community makes it all worth it.  The 2011 Sturgis Rally was a banner year with strong participation in and support for the licensing program and the growth of SMRi’s brands. We thank the hundreds of retailers that carry Officially Licensed Product and look forward to being able to continue to give back to a place that we call home,” said Dean Kinney, Chairman of SMRi.

SMRi was created as a non-profit to support the local community through management of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the intellectual property associated with it to facilitate the vitality and relevance of the most prestigious motorcycle rally in the world.

  1. Besides its mission to improve the rally, SMRi also aims to return a charitable benefit to the greater Sturgis community. SMRi has donated over $53,000 to Sturgis Rally Charities in 2011.

  1. SMRi has the exclusive right to use the trademarks Sturgis® and Black Hills® in conjunction with Sturgis Motorcycle Rally goods and services, and otherwise so as to prevent consumer confusion and false advertising.

  1. Any business is able to buy official licensed merchandise to retail from a wide-variety of the official licensees of SMRi.  Moreover, businesses willing to comply with reasonable quality control requirements with respect to the quality of their Sturgis Motorcycle Rally goods and services and their use of the proprietary trademarks of SMRi are invited to contact SMRi’s licensing agent, HomeSlice Management, to explore whether a license or sublicense is right for their business and for SMRi.

  1. SMRi was pleased that the vast majority of vendors in and around the 2011 Rally carried Officially Licensed Product, and supported the health of the Rally and Black Hills area charities by doing so.

  1. SMRi is actively seeking dialogue with any entities that have questions or concerns regarding Official Licensed Product.  SMRi’s representatives have held numerous meetings with businesspeople, vendors and landowners, to discuss SMRi’s intellectual property rights, the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and to answer questions. SMRi plans to continue this practice.

  1. By supporting SMRi and buying Officially Licensed Product, retailers and consumers are supporting the health and vitality of the greater Sturgis area and the enormous economic impact of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.  SMRi looks forward to continuing to invest in the Sturgis-area community and local charitable causes, which investments are made possible by royalties generated through licensing and sponsorship activities and the countless hours invested by SMRi’s volunteer Board members and many others.
